Stretch Mark Removal

Stretch marks can be a problem for many people. They may occur after rapid weight gain, muscle growth, or during pregnancy. Whatever the cause, although they are not a health risk, stretch marks usually negatively impact a person’s body image and self-esteem. However, there are a few ways that stretch marks can be prevented or removed. Many ointments have been developed to prevent or remove stretch marks, some of dubious merit and others that have been statistically proven to be effective. Surgery and laser treatments are other options for those who can finance them.

Several skin rejuvenation creams are available that are made to treat stretch marks. These are the least expensive and most common remedies, although they are almost always used as a method of prevention, and may not remove stretch marks after the fact. Their recipes vary widely and so do their effectiveness.

Surprisingly, simple cocoa butter has been shown to have almost a 50% chance of effectively preventing stretch marks. One study has shown that a mixture of Gotu Kola extract, vitamin E, and collagen hydrolysates has some preventative potential. A cream of vitamin E, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, elastin and menthol may also have positive effects.

For those to whom money is no object, there are other less common and more expensive methods that may be used to remove stretch marks after the skin has been noticeably scarred. Surgically removing the affected skin is possible in some cases, although some may find this avenue distasteful. Laser treatments are also available, and although this is the most expensive method mentioned so far, it has been shown to be very effective. However, even laser treatment will not work on all stretch mark cases. For example, if the epidermis or dermis layers have been torn, lasers will have no effect at all.

These are some methods of preventing and treating stretch marks. Expecting mothers and body builders may want to start applying a cream recipe or cocoa butter early on as a preventative measure. If stretch mark removal creams have no effect, or if no preventative measures were taken, surgery or laser treatment may be the only remaining options. However, it should be encouraging to know that stretch mark removal is possible for those that take the correct steps.
