Which year are you in college?

I've searched all around online but I'm unable to find the answer.

A bachelor's degree would be 3 or 4 years long. Suppose you meet a college going girl and want to ask her which year she's doing in her college course. Would it be fine to ask, "Which year are you in college"? I think it'll very long to say, "Which year are you doing in your college course right now".

Alternatively, I can ask, "How many years do you have left in college". But I'd really like to know how to ask the first question properly. How do native BE speakers ask the question? Thanks a lot in advance. I'm over the moon to have found this forum!

  • The question would usually be: Which year are you in?

Because it would normally be in the context of talking about college so you wouldn't have to add: 'in college', which would make 'Which year are you in, in college?' which would be correct but awkward-sounding.

    Welcome!

"What year are you in?" is the usual way of asking, assuming the context is being at university or doing a course of study at that sort of level. There wouldn't be any need to repeat 'at university' or 'in the course'.

How long is your degree course?
    Four years.
    What year are you in?

Thank you so much Chez and Hermione! I'm so happy you both cleared by doubt so quickly! You have no idea how much these answers help me. Thanks again :)

I don't know about 'which' being 'more appropriate' than 'what'. Are you using 'appropriate' as a euphemism for 'correct' or unacceptable? Perhaps 'which' is indeed more elegant or stylish in this sort of context.

If 'what' is not correct here, I have been using 'what' rather than 'which' inaccurately for a very long time. But, never too old to learn! :)

I would say most respectfully that, to be honest, you are right by 'more appropriate' I actually meant 'correct'. (I am but a humble non-native, and English is my passion, not forte).
