Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty fans can get their hands on Modern Warfare 2 early, ahead of its planned release date. The highly anticipated sequel is due to launch on October 28, 2022, but if you just can’t wait to be reunited with Captain Price’s glorious moustache, you don’t have to wait so long.

By pre-ordering Modern Warfare 2 on any platform, you will unlock early access to the game’s singleplayer campaign from October 20, 2022. Sure, you’ll get to saddle up with Task Force 141 on their next blockbuster romp though online multiplayer (and presumably other modes) will be sealed off until the official Modern Warfare 2 release date.

It’s an unprecedented move for the long-running FPS franchise. It’s a well known fact that a surprising number of COD players skip straight to the multiplayer without even touching the campaign, so could this be a clever attempt to ignite more interest in MW2’s campaign? Either way, the sequel promises yet another globetrotting thrill ride, following the events of Infinity Ward’s 2019 reboot. It will feature new and returning characters, most notably Roach and Ghost who perhaps share some of the best set-piece moments from the 2009 MW2.

Modern Warfare 2 beta dates

In a way, Call of Duty fans will be getting their hands on the multiplayer much earlier than the campaign. Multiple Modern Warfare 2 beta tests have been confirmed, starting with a PlayStation-exclusive beta before opening to everyone else. Here are the official dates:

SEP 16 – 17 – PlayStation (Early Access)

SEP 18 – 20 – PlayStation

SEP 22 – 23 – Xbox (Early Access) + Battle.Net (Early Access) + PlayStation

SEP 24 – 26 – Xbox + Battle.Net + PlayStation

Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer will finally get its big reveal next month during Call of Duty: Next, a broadcast event that will lay out the future of the popular franchise. We’re hoping to see game modes, maps, operators, and gameplay changes, though the reveals won’t stop there. It’s here that Activision plans to share its first look at Warzone 2 and Warzone Mobile.
