A Million Little Things fans, the end of the ABC drama might be near. But even still, show creator D.J. Nash is focusing on the here and now.

On August 22, Deadline doubled down on reports that A Million Little Things is concluding with season 5. The outlet first mentioned the possibility back in May when the alphabet network renewed the series only a handful of days before the season 4 finale. According to Deadline, D.J. has prepared for the show to come to a close with a pitched “pre-conceived ending.” But neither he nor reps from the network have confirmed that A Million Little Things season 5 is the final chapter.

Instead, D.J. has kept fans in the loop about what’s happening with the new episodes behind the scenes. He revealed that the writers are hard at work right now. “@heydjnash hi dj, when is AMLT gonna be back for s5?” one person wrote on Twitter on June 28.

Shortly after, the executive producer responded with a tangible timeline. “We started back in the writers’ room yesterday,” he tweeted back. “We start shooting episodes after Labor Day. So excited about what we’ve already planned! #AMillionLittleThings.”

Per multiple sites, A Million Little Things season 5 will be released in early 2023.

While D.J. didn’t share a release date for season 5, he previously opened up about why the Boston-based drama was being held for the new year instead of its usual fall TV slot. “We basically made 38 episodes in less than two years,” he wrote in a Twitter reply on May 18. “The whole team needs a little break. But then we’ll be back for an amazing season!”

So, why is there talk about A Million Little Things ending? According to Deadline, ABC appears to want to continue the show but the “producers accepted the season 5 pickup with the presumption that it was going to be the show’s final chapter.” In other words, D.J. and his crew might be looking to end A Million Little Things on their own timeline.

Back in 2019, the showrunner shared a similar sentiment with Good Housekeeping about having the series mapped out since the beginning of season 2.

"It’s completely changeable, but I had a plan for where we’re going," he previously told us. "When it comes to the series, I know what I want the finale to be, and there’s even some things that we’ve planted that our actors don’t know that will set up that finale very, very well. I think [the cast] all kind of feel like this is a five-season show."
