2022 Super Bowl odds: Rams favored by more than a field goal over Bengals against the spread

INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 30: Matthew Stafford #9 and Cooper Kupp #10 of the Los Angeles Rams celebrate after an 11 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game at SoFi Stadium on January 30, 2022 in Inglewood, California. The Los Angeles Rams are now 4.5-point favorites in this year’s Super Bowl. After not seeing much movement in the odds this week, many bookmakers moved the line to 4 on Thursday as the money continues to pour into the underdog Cincinnati Bengals. While many sharps already bet on the Rams, the public loves Joe Burrow and the underdog Bengals in this game.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams weren’t expected to get to the Super Bowl for much of the NFL season. Now the Rams and Bengals will meet in Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams, in Super Bowl LVI. The Rams are favored, opening as 3.5-point favorites on BetMGM and the spread is now at 4.5. The Bengals will be underdogs for the third straight game in the 2022 NFL Playoffs.

The Bengals were 10-7 against the spread in the regular season and covered in all three AFC playoff games. Cincinnati was also 6-3 against the spread as an underdog in the regular season.

Meanwhile, the Rams were 8-9 against the spread in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs. All four Rams playoff games have had similar spreads. LA was a 3-point favorite against the Arizona Cardinals, a 2.5-point underdog against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and a 3.5-point favorite against the San Francisco 49ers.

This isn’t a typical home game, but it is in the Rams’ home stadium. The Rams were 4-4 against the spread at home in the regular season and 1-1 against the spread at home in the playoffs. The Bengals were an impressive 6-2 against the spread on the road with two more covers on the road in the playoffs.

Favorites are 28-24 against the spread in Super Bowl history with two pushes and one pick ’em game. Straight up, favorites are 36-18.

Favorites have covered in three of the past five Super Bowls, but since Super Bowl XXXVI (aka Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl), underdogs are 12-6 ATS.

Teams favored by 10 points or more are 0-4-1 against the spread in the last five such games. Double-digit favorites are 7-6-1 in Super Bowl history.
