Investors rarely take a day off, even if they sometimes need to. But with Easter coming up, some might wonder how that will affect the stock market. Is the stock market open on Good Friday? Investors should know that the stock market will be closed on March 29, 2024 for Good Friday. In addition, the bond markets will be closed on Good Friday and they will also close early the day before, on Maundy Thursday.

Here’s what else you need to know, including a handy chart of stock market closures for 2024.

Stock Market Holidays for 2024

Similar to the schedule of most businesses, the stock market is open for trading only on normal business days — Monday through Friday, excluding major holidays. The stock market, including indexes such as the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will all be closed on Good Friday 2024.

The next closure after Good Friday will be on Monday, May 27 for Memorial Day, with an early closure at 2 p.m. by the bond markets the previous Friday. Here’s a list of the ten holidays the stock market will close in 2024:

  • New Year’s Day: Jan. 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Jan. 15
  • Presidents’ Day: Feb. 19
  • Good Friday: March 29
  • Memorial Day: May 27
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day: June 19
  • Independence Day: July 4
  • Labor Day: Sept. 2
  • Thanksgiving Day: Nov. 28
  • Christmas Day: Dec. 25

What Days Are the Stock Markets Closed?

In addition to the holidays mentioned above, the stock markets sometimes close for events of significant national interest. That last happened in 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic, when the NYSE temporarily shut down physical trading in March after two people tested positive.

If a holiday falls on a weekend, the stock market will close either on the Friday before or Monday after. Here’s a rule you can follow:

  • If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the stock market will close on the Friday before.
  • If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the stock market will close the following Monday.

Do Banks Close on the Same Days as the Stock Market?

The bank holiday schedule is similar to that of the stock market, and includes the same rule for weekends. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the bank will close the preceding Friday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the bank will close the following Monday.
