Steve Burton’s Dramatic Year After GH Exit as Jason Morgan
It’s been a wild ride for the Jason Morgan actor over the past 12 months. Steve Burton wrapped filming on October 27, 2021. And his last General Hospital airdate was November 30, 2021. In case you’re out of the loop, here’s why he left the ABC soap.
GH was the only one of the four soaps to institute a mandatory vaccine policy. Burton revealed that he asked for medical (because he’d had COVID already) and religious exemptions. However, Burton said that he was denied for both exceptions.
So, he worked with the powers-that-be to coordinate his character’s departure. The word from behind-the-scenes at General Hospital is that it was a mutually respectful exit, and he left on good terms.
And the actor said if it worked out, he’d love to return to GH as Jason Morgan. He said it’s about “personal freedom to me. I don’t think anyone should lose their livelihood over this.” But that wasn’t the only bad news to strike the hunky actor.
Burton’s Marriage Crumbles After 23 Years
In the wake of leaving GH, there was also personal drama for the ex-Jason actor. And the way it went down was almost like a soap opera script. To more than two decades, Steve Burton married Sheree Gustin Burton in 1999. But then it all fell apart.
In early May of 2022, Sheree posted a photo cradling a small baby bump. She captioned it “life sure is full of surprises,” as she revealed she’s pregnant with her fourth child. But when General Hospital fans congratulated her husband, Steve Burton dropped a bombshell.
He said the baby isn’t his and said they’d split. Then, two months later, he filed to divorce Sheree, citing irreconcilable differences. His court docs requested that she be denied spousal support. Since then, he’s been devoting time to his kids and work.
Jason Coming Back to General Hospital After Actor Returns to Soaps?
Just three days after filing for divorce, Steve Burton staged his soap opera comeback. No, it wasn’t as Jason Morgan. Instead, it was in the role that launched his soap career. Burton reprised his 1980s role of Harris Michaels on Days of our Lives.
He debuted on July 11, 2022, on Beyond Salem, the Peacock streaming spinoff of the NBC sudser. So, does that mean he’ll return to General Hospital as Jason? Maybe. But the door also seems wide open for Days to bring him onto the main series.
After all, he and DOOL showrunner Ron Carlivati have a past from when Ron was head writer at GH. So, if ABC doesn’t resurrect Jason, maybe NBC will make Steve Burton an offer to play Harris again.
