How many people are in the world? A look at the population in 2022.


It can be hard to imagine how many people live in the world when we all exist in our various smaller communities. Many of us know the general population across the seven continents is around 7 billion people, but has that number changed recently? The answer is yes — by a small percentage which is a large amount of people.

China and India make up a little more than a third of the world’s population. China is the world’s most populous country, having an estimated population of 1.41 billion people in the year 2021, according to the United States Census Bureau’s U.S. and World Population Clock. India's population is around 1.38 billion people.

How many people are in the world?

As of 2020, the World Bank places the world’s current population around 7.76 billion people. The population increased 1% from 2019 to 2020. 

What will be the population in 2050?

Looking to the future, the United Nations predicts the world population will grow to 9.7 billion people in 2050.

How many people are in the U.S. as of 2022?

In 2022, the estimated U.S. population is 332.7 million people, making it the third most populous country in the world.  The District of Columbia has the highest population density in the country, although California is the most populous state with around 39. 2 million residents as of 2021.
