All forms of airline travel require some proof of identity to maintain the safety and security of all passengers. For domestic travel within the United States, the only document required prior to travel is a form of photo identification -- don't forget your boarding pass too, though.

For Adults

All adult travelers must present a state-issued or federally issued form of identification before boarding a domestic flight. This identification must be presented when you check in with the airline and again at the security checkpoint. The ID must show your name, date of birth, gender and an expiration date.

For Minors

Minors do not always need to show proof of identification, but they may be asked. Some airlines ask for a birth certificate, so check before your trip what the guidelines are for the specific airline carrier. Children aren’t required to carry IDs or specific photo identification, but it’s not a bad idea to have one created before your trip, especially if the child is flying as an unaccompanied minor.

Acceptable Forms of Identification

There are a variety of documents you can use, some of which include a U.S. passport, U.S. military ID (active duty or retired and their dependents), a permanent resident card, a U.S. driver’s license or other photo IDs issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, or a Native American tribal photo ID.

Additional Information

If for some reason you’ve lost your ID and couldn’t replace it prior to your flight, it doesn’t mean your trip has to be cancelled. The Transportation Security Administration has alternative methods of verifying your identity, such as using public databases. This will entail additional screening at security, so be prepared for a delay.
