Commonly referred to as the stomach flu, viral gastroenteritis is the second most common illness in the United States. It happens when a virus attacks your stomach and causes inflammation of your stomach lining. Stomach flu is highly contagious and is easily transmitted from person-to-person or through contaminated food, drinks, items, and bathrooms.

Our gastroenterologists are experts in digestive health who are equipped with the latest technology and are immersed in cutting-edge research to treat your stomach flu. Our goal is to prevent spread of the virus and dehydration, and to reduce your symptoms.

Marked by diarrhea, cramps, and sometimes fever, your symptoms will usually last 24 to 72 hours before they go away on their own. Other symptoms of the stomach flu include:

  • Dehydration (a side effect of vomiting or diarrhea)
  • Muscle aches or headache
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
