Monday, May 3 is a bank holiday and many Brits will be getting a three-day weekend. This is the first of two bank holidays in May, a rare treat for Britons with the Spring bank holiday on Monday, May 31.

Britons can enjoy time outside with friends and family - socially distanced - this bank holiday, with lockdown restrictions beginning to ease.

Cafes, pubs and restaurants can now serve customers outside, a welcome return to normality for many.

As with most bank holidays, businesses and shops may have shorter opening hours or be closed entirely.

But if you need to send a letter or collect a parcel, when will the Post Office be open this weekend?

Is the Post Office open today?

The bank holiday is being treated as a Sunday and according to the Royal Mail, there will be no collections or deliveries.

This is true of all bank holidays across the UK, as well as every Sunday of the year.

Usually, the Post Office sends and delivers letters, packages and parcels Monday through to Saturday.

However, most Post Offices will close their doors for the bank holiday.

Some branches located inside supermarkets and other stores may be open.

The Post Office will re-open as normal across the country from Tuesday, May 4.

Most supermarkets will be open today but may close earlier than usual due to the bank holiday.

So, it is worth checking your local supermarket's website or social media for more information before making a journey.

What's the weather like this bank holiday?

Unfortunately for those looking to enjoy a day outside this bank holiday, Met Office yellow weather warnings are in place for wind.

Warnings are in place until 9am on Tuesday, May 4.

These warnings span across the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, South West England, Wales and the West Midlands.

The Met Office warns: “A vigorous area of low pressure is likely to cross northern England on Monday.

“Strong winds are expected to the south of the low centre, affecting Wales and western England during Monday afternoon, then extending to central, southern and eastern England later Monday afternoon and evening.

“Gusts are likely to widely reach 40 to 50 mph inland, and as high as 60 to 65 mph around some coasts of southern England and south Wales.

“The winds should gradually ease through Tuesday morning. The strong winds will be accompanied by some heavy rain at times.”
