Are shops open today? Jubilee bank holiday supermarket opening times for Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and more

The UK is getting an extra bank holiday to mark the Platinum Jubilee, but supermarkets will be affected over the long weekend

The Queen is marking 70 years on the throne this year, the first time that a British monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee.

For many people around the UK, this means a four-day weekend, thanks to the bonus of an additional bank holiday in Elizabeth II’s honour.

While the extra day off is very welcome for anyone planning on joining the large-scale celebrations or hosting a party, you might encounter some disruption as a result.

Postal services will be affected, for example, while shops might be operating at different times – here’s what we know about the main supermarkets over the Platinum Jubilee.

When are supermarkets open for the Jubilee?

Asda

The hours for individual stores may vary, however, based on previous bank holidays it is likely some Asda stores could open from 8am instead of 7am and close at 8pm instead of 10pm or midnight on the bank holidays.

You can check the hours of your local store here.

Aldi

Aldi says that on Thursday 2 June, stores are open from 8am to 10pm. On Friday, the hours are again 8am to 10pm, and the same on Saturday. On Sunday, stores will open later, at 10am, and close earlier at 4pm.

When are the other UK bank holidays in 2022?

Bank holiday dates slightly across the UK. England and Wales always have the same bank holidays, but Scotland and Northern Ireland have some of their own dates.

For example, Scotland’s summer bank holiday falls at the start of August, rather than the end of the month.

All four nations used to mark the same date, following the implementation of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, introduced by the Liberal Politician Sir John Lubbock.

However, the date for England, Wales and Northern Ireland moved permanently to the end of August in 1971, following a trial period which started in 1965.

Here are the 2022 bank holiday dates for the four UK nations in full:

England and Wales bank holidays 2022

  • Monday 3 January (New Year’s Day substitute)
  • Friday 15 April (Good Friday)
  • Monday 18 April (Easter Monday)
  • Monday 2 May (early May bank holiday)
  • Thursday 2 June (spring bank holiday)
  • Friday 3 June (Platinum Jubilee bank holiday)
  • Monday 29 August (summer bank holiday)

  • Monday 1 August (summer bank holiday)
  • Wednesday 1 November (St Andrew’s Day)
  • Monday 26 December (Boxing Day)
  • Tuesday 27 December (Christmas Day substitute)

Northern Ireland bank holidays 2022

  • Tuesday 12 July (Battle of the Boyne)
  • Monday 29 August (summer bank holiday)
