Mexico National Football Team Will Be Back in Green Home Kits for 2022 World Cup

After wearing black home kits since 2019, the Mexican national football team will be back in green in time for this winter’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación (FMF) and Adidas unveiled the new national team kits on Friday, July 7. They are inspired by the Aztec god Quetzalcóatl, a feathered serpent who was the god of winds and rain, and the creator of the world and humanity, according to WorldHistory.org. “His unique strength will inspire the team as they participate in the world’s biggest sporting tournament,” the FMF says on its website.

The shirt is predominantly green, with a pattern of zigzagging thin black lines on the front and sleeves that radiates out from the neck. This pattern evokes the feathers found on Quetzalcóatl’s neck in many depictions of the god, as well as a feathered headdress called a “copilli” that Aztec people have worn for generations. They believe it imparts spiritual strength and courage onto the wearer.

The dark green crew neck collar has red piping on each side, and the Adidas shoulder stripes are red. Red stripes down the sides of the jersey and along the back hem. A likeness of Quetzalcóatl is printed inside the collar. Like the Argentina jersey unveiled earlier on Friday, almost the entire jersey is covered in an embossed pattern of short irregular diagonal lines.

The shirt is paired with white shorts that have red Adidas stripes down the sides and green stripes around the back hems. Photos released on Friday show both green and red socks as part of the whole set.

This kit is the first to feature the Mexican national team’s new crest, which was unveiled back in November 2021. It depicts an eagle — also seen on the Mexican flag — perched atop a soccer ball in front of a shield with an Aztec design. Underneath is the word “MÉXICO” set in an inline font.
