Automakers usually raise the price of each trim level by $500-$1500 every year. This increase makes up for inflation and added features. For example, the Toyota Tundra SR started at $34,125 in 2021 and $35,950 in 2022. But Toyota just bumped the TRD Pro trim’s price by a whopping $17,580!

The 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro started at $49,225

TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development and it is one of the most venerated badges in motorsports. Toyota’s TRD Pro line includes some of the most capable off-road vehicles around. The Tundra TRD Pro is a full-size off-roading truck. In 2021, it was the top trim of the Tundra lineup.

The automaker offered the 2021 Tundra TRD Pro as a 2WD or 4WD. It had a limited-slip rear differential and Michelin LTX A/T 2 tires.

According to MotorTrend the 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro had trouble keeping up with its Tacoma TRD Pro cousin and was in need of a drivetrain and software upgrade.

How much will the 2022 TRD Pro Tundra cost?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro starts at $66,805. That’s $17,580 more than the 2021 TRD Pro.

2022 is the first year of the Toyota Tundra’s third generation. It seems the automaker answered MotorTrend’s pleas and upgraded every aspect of its full-size truck.

Toyota tossed the inefficient old 5.7-liter V8 in favor of the new Tundra V6. This twin-turbocharged new engine improves on the outgoing drivetrain’s power output and trounces its fuel efficiency.

Off-roading enthusiasts will be happy to hear that the new Tundra also rides on a lightweight fully-boxed frame with rear coil springs originally engineered for the new Land Cruiser 300 series.

The 2022 Tundra TRD Pro trim boasts several features MotorTrend sorely missed in the 2021 version. Firstly, this Tundra gets the off-road driver aids the Tacoma enjoyed. These include a trail camera, Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) which uses the ABS to prevent wheels with low traction from spinning, and CRAWL which is a sort of off-road cruise control that allows you to focus on steering.

You can get a 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Off-Road for $46,165

The new 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro features lots of off-road goodies. These include an electronic locking rear differential, 2.5-inch FOX Racing shock absorbers, BBS Forged TRD rims, Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, and a skidplate emblazoned with TRD.

That said, the latest Tundra TRD Pro costs nearly as much as the Ford Raptor ($68k). And while the Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid drivetrain makes more torque, it lacks the long-travel suspension that defines flagship desert racers such as the Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.

But luckily, there’s a new TRD-tuned Tundra for 2022. The Tundra’s TRD Off-Road trim level is now an options package on either the Tundra limited or SR5. You can get a 4WD 2022 Tundra SR5 with the TRD Off-Road package for just $46,165.

This package doesn’t have FOX shocks, but does have TRD-tuned Bilstein shocks. It doesn’t have BBS Forged rims, but does have TRD off-road rims and a narrower version of the Falken tires on the TRD Pro. Finally, it doesn’t have TRD printed on its skidplate–but it still has a skidplate. The truck even has Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, though they’re slightly narrower than the TRD Pro’s rubber.

With all of Toyota’s off-road driver aids and a locking rear differential, the 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Off-Road is more capable than the 2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. And at $46K, it costs less than the top-trim 2021 Tundra did.
