Dermal Fillers: The Right Answer To Plastic Surgery?

Repairing wrinkles and other signs of aging have certainly come a long way in the last twenty years. Years ago, the only way to gain a youthful appearance was to undergo a face lift or have some other kind of painful cosmetic surgery. Now, it’s as simple as having a substance injected into the tiniest of wrinkles and you can instantly gain a more youthful appearance without having invasive surgery and having to endure a long healing period. Common dermal fillers are Restylane and Juvederm. These are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural substance essential to the skin maintaining a youthful and refreshed look.

While dermal fillers are much more convenient for the patient, there are still risks and downsides. Using fillers only lasts for a short amount of time, anywhere from a few months to an entire year. Additionally, most patients experience bruising or swelling after the procedure. In the worst case scenario, some patients can have an allergic reaction.

There are a number of plastic surgeons that are in opposition of using fillers as a regularly, and believe regularly injecting the skin with a foreign substance can in no way be safe. These plastic surgeons often believe there are a number of side effects that are inevitable and that may not show up until many years after the fillers have been used.

There’s also the point that dermal fillers simply aren’t an easy “fix all” solution. For example, if a patient has a lot of sagging, there’s just logistically no way that using fillers will fix the issue, and the only truly effective way to combat this is to receive a lifting procedure. Additionally, faces can end up looking disproportionate or unwanted effects like lumps can develop.

No matter what the known risks are though, there are still an increasing number of women and men that choose to have dermal fillers. Many different types of dermal fillers exists, so the more common question that plastic surgeons hear is not whether they should have the procedure done, but rather, what one they should have done.

Most dermatologists agree that using dermal fillers has dramatically changed the world of plastic surgery, and that those who use dermal fillers regularly for skin rejuvenation can avoid having to have a face-lift for at least ten years. Some doctors even think that within the next twenty years, there will be no need for face-lifts at all.
